During first quarter, our keyboard classes will be expanding their note reading to treble and bass clef notation and will learn to perform more advanced keyboard music. They will also learn how the history of music influenced our music today and will begin composing their own pieces! Our Semester 1 Discovery Chorus students will expand their note-reading, sight-reading and performance skills. These groups' culminating activities will be performances in the December 13 Winter concert assemblies and corresponding evening concerts. Our honors choir, Challenger Chorus, will be working on repertoire for the upcoming Winter concert and community events. New and returning members: Be sure to visit your Google Classroom and web page for schedules and updates! Lastly, as a reminder for all our students: Be sure to check your homework and activity pages each week for updates. Changes can be made at any time, so it's a good idea to check regularly for any additional or deleted assignments, especially if you've recently been absent from school or are planning to be.
Remember: Success is where opportunity meets preparedness! :)
* MUSIC DEPT Begins Recorder Program * * Cost for recorder, case & book is $12 from Music Dept. due by Aug. 17 * July 26, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians, Learning to play the recorder is an integral part of our 6th grade music program here at Paradise Honors Middle School. As you may know, the recorder is a flute-like instrument that is well-suited for introductory musical instruction. It is easy to play and is an inexpensive aid to learning musical notation. We have made arrangements with our supplier to offer you “Suzuki” brand recorders at an economical price. This particular model is a three-piece quality unit made from durable plastic which can be adjusted for playing comfort as well as for tuning purposes. We’re offering a recorder set that will include our classroom method book “Suzuki Modern Classroom Recorder”, a cleaning rod, and a case. This set is priced at $12.00 and is currently available from Mrs. Gordon (#159) in the Music Department during regular class times and at the following times: Thursdays and Fridays from 2:00-2:30 pm.Please make all checks out to PHMS Music or have exact change sealed in an envelope printed with your child’s full name and grade. If your child already has a recorder and/or book, they will need to bring them to music class by the last day of their 2nd full week in Music (Quarter 1: Aug. 17) so that we can make sure the recorder is in working order and that it is the same type we will be using in class (Soprano with English fingering). Please note that not every recorder is in the same “key” or of the same quality, so it may produce different notes or make an inferior tone. Students may purchase the Suzuki recorder separately from PHMS for $7.00. Students who already have a working Soprano recorder (pending approval from the Music Department) will only need to purchase the method book (available for purchase at $5.00 each from PHMS). Since we will be playing recorders the first day of the third full week of your student’s Music (Aug. 20), it is very important that all students check off their recorders before this date. If you have any questions or concerns about these requirements, you may contact Mrs. Gordon at 623.455.7559 or [email protected]. Thank you for enriching your child’s musical experience and for your ongoing support of the Arts at PHMS! Sincerely, Charlotte Gordon 623.455.7559 [email protected]
